Highway 79 Traffic Pileup In Winchester: 1 Injured

WINCHESTER, CA — One person was injured Tuesday in a four-vehicle crash on Highway 79 in Winchester that caused a complete closure of the corridor.

The crash was reported just after 5 p.m. on the northbound side of the highway, south of Domenigoni Parkway, according to the California Highway Patrol.

It was unclear what caused the crash, but one motorist wound up trapped, officials said.

Cal Fire/Riverside County Fire Department crews reached the location within a few minutes, extricating the victim, who was taken Inland Valley Medical Center in Wildomar for treatment of moderate to major injuries, according to reports from the scene.

The other parties involved in the wreck evidently did not require medical attention.

Firefighters and CHP officers shut down both north- and southbound lanes due to the amount of wreckage.

As of 5:30 p.m., the lane closures remained in effect.

The cause of the crash was under investigation.
