MURRIETA, CA — The community is invited to be a part of history next month during the Murrieta Fire & Rescue BBQ that will celebrate the department's 76 years of service with food, vendors, live music and a DJ.

The free-to-attend bash is scheduled from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. April 15 at Murrieta’s Town Square Park and is open to the public, according to an announcement from the city.

"The day will be filled with fun, food, and entertainment and is a way for the community to show their support for the dedicated public safety personnel serving at MFR," the announcement read. "It is also a way for MFR to show its appreciation for the community it has served the past 76 years."

Murrieta Fire & Rescue celebrates its official anniversary the day after this year’s barbecue. It was April 16, 1947, that citizens voted to form the Murrieta Fire Protection District.

The first Murrieta firefighter’s barbecue was held in 1948.

"As is the tradition, barbecue guests will enjoy a smoked tri-tip lunch, music, beer and wine garden, cornhole tournament, and a vendors’ market," according to the announcement. "Attendees will get to cheer on fire explorers from throughout Southern California in the annual Fire Explorers 'Muster' Competition."

Reflecting on MFR's long-time service, Chief Bernie Molloy said, a strong culture has been built over the last 76 years, "and it is an honor to share part of that culture with the community."

The fire department's early days were humble. Following the 1947 formation, the community donated $1,400 to purchase a 1941 International 4x4 crash truck. At the toll of a bell atop the Methodist Church, the 10 fire district volunteers responded to six calls that first year, according to the city.

In 1987, Murrieta Fire & Rescue changed from an all-volunteer outfit to a combined career and volunteer-staffed fire district. In July 1990, MFR was the first fire department in Riverside County to implement the Emergency Medical Technician - Defibrillator. In August 2018, MFR became the first accredited fire agency in Riverside County and the 18th in the state, according to the city.
