MURRIETA, CA — Halloween lands on a Friday this year, which is likely to spur more trick-or-treating and other street traffic throughout Murrieta and police are urging all those who celebrate to urge caution.
As Halloween approaches next weekend, the Murrieta Police Department is offering safety tips to all, whether you're taking the kids trick-or-treating or hosting a party.
"Let’s have a safe and spooktacular Halloween, Murrieta," the department wrote on social media.

Trick-Or-Treating:

- Always accompany young children during trick-or-treating and plan a safe route in well-lit areas.
- Inspect all treats at home before eating. Throw away anything unwrapped or suspicious.
Costumes:
- Ensure costumes fit well and don't block vision or impede movement to prevent trips and falls.
- Avoid long, trailing costumes or accessories that may cause accidents or entanglements.
At-Home Party Safety:
- Keep paths and stairways well lit to prevent trips and falls.
- Use flameless candles or battery-operating lights for decorations to avoid fire hazards.
Haunted Houses:
- Follow all posted rules and age recommendations to ensure a safe experience.
- Be aware of any age restrictions or recommendations for certain attractions.
Pet Safety:
- Keep pets inside during Halloween festivities to prevent them from getting scared or agitated.
- Don't feed animals Halloween treats. Candy may contain substances toxic to pets, such as chocolate or xylitol. Often, you won't be able to tell what a treat or piece of candy contains just by inspecting it.
