Murrieta Valley USD Considers Paying For 6-Month Resignation Notices

District employees planning a departure could get a financial incentive equal to 2% of their annual salary if they give six months' notice.

MURRIETA, CA — The Murrieta Valley Unified School District does not want employees to resign. Instead, the MVUSD is considering a strategy that would financially incentivize permanent employees to give early notification if they are planning to quit or retire.

Paying the one-time incentive for extended notices would allow the district to recruit and hire high-quality replacements amid a tight labor market, according to district documents.

The proposed resolution up for consideration during Thursday's regularly scheduled MVUSD governing board meeting would, if approved, pay employees who are planning to depart 2% of their annual salary if they submit a written non-revocable resignation or retirement letter to the district's human resources department months ahead their last day.

The letter must be received by Jan. 31 and must designate a departure date between June 3, 2024, and June 30, 2024, according to MVUSD documents.

The early notification incentive would help the district better prepare and staff up for the 2024/2025 school year, according to the documents.

District staff estimates the incentive will cost the MVUSD $225,000 based on a 5% participation rate. That cost could go up or down, depending on actual participation. The program could save the district money in the 2024/2025 school year, according to the documents.

Open session of Thursday's MVUSD governing board meeting starts at 5 p.m. See the full meeting agenda here.
