As part of a government class, TPS seniors interviewed Congressman Duncan Hunter, R-Alpine, about issues he faces as part of the United States House of Representatives.
The following is a news release submitted by Heritage Classical Charter Schools:
Winchester, CA – 11/18/2013; On Friday, Nov. 15, Temecula Preparatory School’s (TPS) Senior class had the distinct privilege of spending an hour with U.S. Congressman Duncan Hunter (CA-50) via an on-line video conference session during the first part of their school day.
As do all senior students in California, the TPS seniors are required to take a Government course during the first semester of their final year of high school. During this semester they study the legislative, executive, and judicial processes.
This year the TPS seniors were given the opportunity to actually interview Congressman Duncan Hunter (CA-50) about real issues that he faces as part of the United States House of Representatives. The hour-long session was filled with questions regarding governmental processes on specific issues Congress is now facing including the health care legislation that Congressman Hunter and his colleagues voted on that day and raised concerns for President Obama as he watched 39 Democrats vote with Republicans to make major adjustments to his national health care plan.
A couple of the questions asked by the students were, “Your website stated that you want to ‘ensure access to quality, affordable care’ for everyone. How do you and Congress plan to do this without raising costs for everyone?” and “What implications does the US’ stance on individual privacy have on the way global citizens use the internet, social networks, and telecommunications?”
Terri Marek, TPS’ Principal, stated, “I am honored that our TPS seniors were given the opportunity to spend their morning talking with Congressman Hunter. It gave them the chance to ask their questions and to hear well-articulated responses. They were also able to connect with Congressman Hunter and to get a glimpse into the world of politics. Many of our students commented that the Congressman was very personable and interesting to talk to. Our seniors were the first class at TPS to get this rare opportunity to talk to a Congressman and we hope we can have this chance again in the future."
Congressman Hunter represents California's 50th Congressional District. Soon after the September 11 attack Hunter quit his job and joined the United States Marine Corps. Hunter entered active service as a Lieutenant. Over the course of his service career, Hunter served three combat tours overseas: two in Iraq and one in Afghanistan and was the first Marine combat veteran of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan elected to Congress.
