3 Arrests, 21 Citations at Newark DUI Checkpoint
The DUI checkpoint was held Saturday night.
NEWARK, CA — The Newark Police Department made three arrests Saturday night at a DUI checkpoint and issued another 21 citations.
One driver was arrested for driving under the influence, another driver was arrested for a DUI warrant and for operating a motor vehicle without a court ordered ignition locking device, and the third driver was arrested for being in possession of a controlled substance.
Officers also issued 21 citations for either driving without a license or for driving while their license was suspended or revoked.
The checkpoint was held near the intersection of Thornton Avenue and Newark Boulevard from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. The location was chosen because of previous impaired driving-related crashes in that area.
The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints are to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off roads.
Funding for the checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
