5 Things You Need to Know: May 23-29

  1. Come and play a few rounds of bingo at the Tri Cities League of Volunteers Bingo Night on Monday, May 23, at 6:30 p.m at 35753 Cedar Blvd., Newark. Doors open at 4 p.m. and the games begin at 6:30 p.m. LOV hosts bingo nights weekly on Mondays and Saturdays.
  2. Newark begins its participation in the statewide on Monday, May 23. From now through June 5, police officers will be looking for and citing unbelted drivers and passengers. The fine for first-time adult violators is a minimum of $142. If a child under 16 in your vehicle is not wearing a seatbelt or in a carseat, the fine is $445.
  3. Show your artistic side Wednsday at Open Mic Night at the Essanay Cafe in Niles. Musicians, poets and comedians can display their talents starting at 7 p.m.; sign-ups for performers begin at 6:3o p.m. The cafe offers a bistro-style menu throughout the evening. Open Mic nights are held on the second and fourth Wednesdays of every month.
  4. Students in grades K-12 can get help from high school and college volunteers as part of the Homework Express program at the .  runs from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays during the school year. Drop-ins are welcome. The service is free.
  5. Watch or wrestle at Swiss Park's on Saturday, May 28. Wrestlers of all ages and skill levels are invited to take part. Sign-ups begin at 11 a.m., with events starting at 11:30 a.m. General admission is $10; free for all wrestlers and children 18 years and younger. Awards will be presented at 8 p.m.
