Council to Consider Demolition of Former Steakhouse Building

A proposal requests for the demolition of Cattlemen's for two new commercial buildings, including an AutoZone store.

The Newark City Council will hold a public hearing on Thursday to consider demolition of the former Cattlemen’s Restaurant off Jarvis Avenue and Newark Boulevard.

City officials recommend that the council approve a conditional use permit allowing for destruction of the restaurant to make room for two new commercial buildings, according to documents provided within Thursday’s council meeting agenda.

Both buildings are located in the Rosemont Square shopping center. The request comes from Imwalle Properties.

The new commercial building that would be closest to the Newark Boulevard and Jarvis Avenue corner would be approximately 4,360 square feet and provide drive-through service.

Minutes from the Planning Commissions June 7 meeting provided within the agenda indicate that a coffee shop has expressed interest in occupying the drive-through facility, according to Don Imwalle of Imwalle Properties.

Currently, Newark does not have any drive-through coffee shops.

The other building in the proposal would be for an AutoZone, a retail auto parts store. The building would occupy approximately 6,640 square feet.

The existing Cattlemen’s building totals about 9,760 square feet.

At the same meeting, the council is scheduled to vote on several items in the consent agenda. Those include calling for and giving notice of a general municipal election on Nov. 8.

Mayor , so a new mayor will be elected for a two-year term. Two council seats with four-year terms will also be filled.

Candidates may file nomination papers papers from July 18 to Aug. 12. If, as expected, Mayor Smith does not file, the filing period for the mayoral seat is automatically extended through Aug. 17.

The council will also hear three reports Thursday:

  • To consider authorization of the ’s participation in a consolidated dispatch study to be conducted by DELTAWRX Management Consultants in partnership with the Fremont and Union City police departments.
  • To consider the intent to abandon the right-of-way of a portion of Mowry School Road north of John Muir Drive as requested by property owners and to establish a public hearing for July 29.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. at the City Administration Building, 37101 Cedar Blvd.
