Council to Discuss Proposed Construction of Townhomes

New townhomes may be built along Thornton Avenue in the near future.

A public hearing about a proposal to build a 14-unit neighborhood full of townhomes will be held at tonight’s council meeting, which begins at 7:30 p.m. at City Hall, 37101 Newark Blvd.

City council is scheduled to hold a public hearing on whether to award a conditional use permit and approve the development’s tentative tract map as part of the project at the meeting.

According to city documents, the neighborhood would be built on 0.66 acres of land located on the 6200 block of Thornton Avenue. The lot – which lies nearly 600 feet west from Newark Boulevard – is currently vacant.

The parcel was once allocated for the construction of a three-story, 18-unit apartment building. That proposal was approved in 2003 but the permit approval expired in 2005 after the building was not pursued, according to the city council’s agenda packet.

The new proposal includes the construction of four three-story buildings, with seven of the units consisting of three bedrooms and three and one half bathrooms and the other seven units consisting of three bedrooms and two and one half bathrooms.

Documents show that the proposed size of each unit, excluding the garages, would range from 1,550 to 2,143 square feet. See more details in the agenda above.

Also at Thursday’s council meeting:

• City council is scheduled to vote on whether to allow Newark police to with the option to purchase it from Acme Auto Leasing LLC.
• City staff members will update councilmembers about an emergency repair that was ordered at Alameda County Fire Station No. 27.
• The council will vote on whether to seek out professional services for the second phase of updating Newark’s General Plan.
