A list of crimes reported in Newark during the week of Oct. 23

The following is a summary of significant crime and incidents reported in Newark between Oct. 23 and Oct. 28 as released by the Newark Police Department.

TUESDAY, OCT. 23

Car damaged in attempted burglary

Police were called to the 5000 block of Abbotford Court around 3:20 a.m. after a resident reported that his/her car had been broken into. Authorities were told that the resident heard glass breaking, went outside and saw a suspect fleeing the area. Nothing was taken

Woman caught shoplifting

A 47-year-old Pleasanton woman was arrested on suspicion of shoplifting out of Macy’s at NewPark Mall around 1:45 p.m. The woman was also arrested on suspicion of petty theft with a prior conviction and was booked into Santa Rita Jail.

Man Arrested After Reporting that Voices Told Him to Steal

A 38-year-old Newark man was arrested from the Mowry Plaza Shopping Center around 6:15 p.m. after he called 9-1-1 “to report voices in his head telling him to steal.” Authorities arrested the man on suspicion of being under the influence of drugs.

THURSDAY, OCT. 25

Four Arrested From E-Z 8 Motel

One woman and three men were arrested after police were called to E-Z 8 Motel just before 11 a.m. about multiple “unwanted” guests in a room. Police found a 22-year-old Livermore woman, a 31-year-old Union City man, a 28-year-old Hayward man and a 25-year-old Newark man inside of the room, in which authorities also found a meth pipe, scales, packaging materials and possible stolen property. The three men are also said to be on parole. All four were arrested on suspicion of possession of drug paraphernalia and were booked into Santa Rita Jail.

Home on Birch Street Burglarized

Police are searching for a man suspected of burglarizing a home on the 38300 block of Birch Street around 11 a.m. The suspect was described as a 5-foot-7, 140 pound white or Hispanic male between the ages of 16 and 17. He was last seen wearing a gray sweatshirt, jeans and a backpack.

Thefts at NewPark Mall, Newark Memorial High School

A 21-year-old Fremont woman was arrested on suspicion of petty theft with a prior arrest for theft out of Spencer’s Gifts at NewPark Mall just before 1 p.m. She was booked into Fremont Jail. Also, a MacBook Pro laptop was reported stolen from a classroom at Newark Memorial High School around 2:15 p.m.

Drunken Man Found Near Busy Intersection

A man was arrested on suspicion of being drunk in public after police were called to the intersection of Newark Bouleavard and Musick Avenue just before 5 p.m. to a report of a man on the ground. Police found the 37-year-old Newark man and determined he was too drunk to care for himself. He was arrested and booked into Santa Rita Jail.

FRIDAY, OCT. 26

Pawnshop Armed Robbery Leads to Manhunt, Arrest

A man was arrested Friday in connection to an armed robbery of a Newark pawnshop after he bolted from a moving vehicle and ran into a Fremont neighborhood, prompting a manhunt, police said. Authorities were called to Greenback Pawnbrokers on the 7100 block of Thornton Avenue in Newark after an armed robbery was reported around 3:40 p.m., according to a Newark police statement. The incident then lead to a manhunt after police saw the man flee from a vehicle and run into a Fremont neighborhood. Read the full report here.

SATURDAY, OCT. 27

Two Arrested After Police Spot Car Passenger Hanging Outside of Window

While patrolling, an officer saw a car passenger hanging outside of a window as the vehicle sped off. The officer then saw another passenger throw something outside of the window and the four occupants of the vehicle were detained. The driver, a 32-year-old Newark man, was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. Another passenger, a 31-year-old woman, was also arrested after she insisted that she go to jail for being drunk in public. Police learned that the object thrown out of the vehicle was a Halloween mask. The man was cited and released, and the woman was booked into Santa Rita Jail.

Berkeley Man Caught Stealing Items From Railroad Storage

A 42-year-old Berkeley man was arrested around 9:45 a.m. after people reported seeing him steal items from a railroad storage yard near Filbert Street. The man was arrested on suspicion of petty theft and trespassing

Home Burglarized on Garrone Place

A home being renovated on Garrone Place was reported burglarized around 10:15 a.m. Police said they learned the suspect(s) entered by smashing a rear glass door. Authorities said a red pancake air compressor and black cordless drill.

Stolen Laptops Found

Police responded to an apartment on Baine Avenue around 10:40 p.m. to do a follow-up on the investigation of a laptop stolen from a teacher at Newark Memorial High School. Police were able to find out where the laptop was because it had tracking software installed. Police made contact with a former Newark Memorial High School student who lived in the home who was currently under house arrest and the teenager was arrested on suspicion of possession of stolen property after police located the computer. Police also found three other Dell laptop computers that each had an “Alameda County Office of Education” sticker on them. The minor was transported to Juvenile Hall and the investigation is ongoing.

SUNDAY, OCT. 28

Reports of Thefts of Gas, U-Haul Truck

Police were called to 3D Catering after it was reported that a person syphoned gas from a company vehicle around 10:30 a.m. About an hour later, police were called to Bettencourt Street after it was reported that suspect(s) tried to steal a U-Haul truck.

Petty Theft out of Macy’s

A 41-year-old Union City woman was arrested and cited on suspicion of petty theft and trespassing out of Macy’s at NewPark Mall around 2 p.m.

Driver Falls Asleep, Crashes Car

Police responded to a solo-vehicle accident at the intersection of Jarvis Avenue and Spruce Street around 11 p.m. after a driver of a vehicle fell asleep at the wheel. A power pole was damaged but no injuries were reported.
