Crime Log: Loose Pit Bull Tranquilized; Attempted Gold Chain Snatching

The following is a summary of significant crime and incidents reported in Newark between Jan. 30 and Feb. 5 as released by the Newark Police Department.

WEDNESDAY, JAN. 30

Man arrested on suspicion of domestic battery

A 21-year-old Newark man led officers on a short pursuit after allegedly battering his girlfriend and fleeing on a bicycle. Officers responded to the 6000 block of Amador Place at about 10 a.m. where they found the victim with a bloody lip. Officers located the suspect fleeing on his bike on the 36900 block of Mulberry Street. He was arrested after a short foot pursuit and booked into Fremont Jail on suspicion of felony domestic battery and resisting arrest. The victim obtained an emergency protective order.

“Man down” report ends up being a really drunk dude

Officers responded to the intersection of Cedar Boulevard and Breton Drive at about 2:10 p.m. on a report of a “man down.” Arriving officers found a 55-year-old man severely intoxicated. The man also had a small bindle of meth in his possession. The man was arrested on suspicion of being drunk in public and possession of methamphetamine.

Attempted burglars evade police

A resident on the 5800 block of Peachtree Drive reported an in-progress burglary in front of his home. The caller said two males were inside his sister’s car attempting to steal the car stereo at about 4:15 p.m. The suspects were scared off by the witness. Arriving officers spotted the suspect vehicle driving westbound on Thornton Avenue and attempted to stop the car. The vehicle failed to stop and sped off at 90 mph. Due to the high-speed, officers called off the pursuit.

THURSDAY, JAN. 31

Man tries to get brother’s car out of police custody, gets himself arrested

A man who impersonated his brother in an attempt to get his brother’s car out of police custody wound up getting himself arrested. A man came to the Newark Police Station lobby at about 8 p.m. and requested that his vehicle, which was involved in a hit-and-run earlier that day, be released to him. An officer became suspicious when the photo in the ID didn’t quite match up to the man in the lobby. Officers eventually determined that the man in the lobby was impersonating his brother, who was the rightful owner of the vehicle. The man, however, had a warred for driving with a suspended license in Santa Clara County. A brief struggle ensued but the man was eventually arrested on his warrant and booked into Santa Rita Jail.

FRIDAY, FEB. 1

Residential burglary

A home on the 37100 block of Olive Street was burglarized between 6 and 8 p.m. The suspects entered the home through an unlocked rear door and made off with a computer and jewelry.

Hit-and-run suspect captures with help of citizens

Officers were sent to the 36800 block of Sycamore Street at about 10:30 p.m. to help CHP with a hit-and-run suspect who was involved in an accident on the freeway. Concerned citizens followed the suspect into Newark and directed an officer to the suspect. The suspect, a 32-year-old San Francisco man, attempted to flee on foot but was tackled. He was arrested on suspicion of resisting arrest, hit-and-run and driving with a suspended license.

SUNDAY, FEB. 3

21-year-old arrested on multiple charges

A 21-year-old Newark man was arrested on various traffic and drug charges after a collision. Officers found the suspect following an accident at 10:15 a.m. and discovered that he was driving without a valid driver’s license. He also had marijuana in his possession. He was eventually arrested on suspicion of driving without a license, driving without insurance and possession of marijuana.

MONDAY, FEB. 4

Attempted gold chain snatching

A man tried to snatch a necklace off a woman at the intersection of Cedar Boulevard and Joaquin Murrieta Street. The victim said the robbery occurred at 2:30 p.m. the previous day when a suspect ran up to her and pulled the necklace from her neck. The victim said the necklace fell down the front of the shirt but the suspect was able to grab a small gold pendant from the chain. The suspect fled into a nearby condo complex.

Two restaurants burglarized at NewPark Mall

Officers responded to NewPark Mall at about 10:10 a.m. where a cash register was broken into at Taqueria La Tita. A small amount of cash was taken.

The Crepe Bar was also burglarized. Officers found the break room ransacked and $135 stolen from the tip jar.

Loose pit bull tranquilized

Multiple residents reported a large tan pit bull chasing people in the area of Cherry Street and Thornton Avenue. Officers responded around noon and located the large dog. After a 45-minute chase and two tranquilizer darts, the dog was captured. The dog was taken to a vet and then to the Fremont Animal Control Facility.

Woman tries to pass stolen check

Officers responded to the Check Center on 5710 Thornton Ave. at about 6:30 p.m. where an 18-year-old Union City woman had attempted to pass a check that was reported stolen from a burglary in Turlock. The woman was arrested on suspicion of theft and fraud charges and booked at Fremont Jail.

Burglaries:

A home was broken into on the 38200 block of Cedar Boulevard. The suspect stole tools from the garage.

A vehicle was burglarized at about 5:53 p.m. at the Don Edward Wildlife Refuge. The window was smashed and a purse, which had ID cards inside, and an iPad were stolen.

A home was burglarized on the 5300 block of Chapman Drive between 4:30 and 10 p.m. The suspect entered the home through the kitchen window. Two safes with jewelry were stolen.

TUESDAY, FEB. 5

Parolee-at-large locks himself inside bedroom

Officers were sent to the 6300 block of Cotton Avenue to serve a warrant on a parolee-at-large. The 32-year-old Newark man had locked himself in a bedroom and refused to come out. Officers forced their way into the room and just as a police dog was about to enter, the suspect surrendered. He was arrested on suspicion of resisting arrest and a parole violation.

A 25-year-old woman was also arrested after trying to delay officers and helping her boyfriend hide. She was also found with meth in her possession.

Gang member found with loaded gun

An officer stopped a pedestrian near Cedar Boulevard and Cedar Court. The suspect, an 18-year-old known gang member, was found with .22 caliber bullets in his possession. Officers searched the area and found a loaded handgun in the brush. He was taken to the police station and interviewed. Detective received consent to search the suspect’s home where they seized various gang paraphernalia, including red hats, beanies and bandannas. The suspect was booked on suspicion of being drunk in public and being a gang member in possession of a loaded gun.
