Man Arrested After Gunshots Fired in Air

Police said the Newark man fired three rounds in front of his home

A 35-year-old man was arrested Sunday night after Newark police responded to Olive Street and Dairy Avenue to reports of gunshots fired into the air.

Police found and arrested Monroe Charles of Newark after they learned he had fired the weapon during an argument with his girlfriend, said Commander Robert Douglas of the Newark Police Department.

Charles fired three rounds just after 8 p.m. Sunday on the 36700 block of Olive Street, police said. Police recovered the handgun and ammunition. No injuries were reported.

He was arrested on suspicion of negligent discharge of a firearm, shooting at an inhabited house or occupied car, assault and battery and unlawful carrying and possession of weapons. He has been booked into Santa Rita Jail.
