Fremont Man Struck and Killed By Commuter Train off Stevenson Boulevard

A man was struck and killed by a commuter train traveling through Stevenson Boulevard Saturday morning.

Authorities responded to Stevenson Boulevard near the Union Pacific Railroad tracks, west of Eureka Drive in Newark, around 10:37 a.m. Saturday to a report of a pedestrian being hit by a train, police said.

The man was found dead at the scene, about 200 yards south of Stevenson Boulevard near the railroad tracks that cross Stevenson Boulevard at the Newark-Fremont border, police said.

The man was later identified as Fremont resident Gary Patrick Carter, 47.

Upon investigation, Newark and Fremont police officers who responded reported that "it appeared that while attempting to gather his two dogs away from the tracks, he was struck by an Amtrak train traveling approximately 70 mph, carrying approximately 100 passengers," according to the report from the Newark Police Department.

Commander Robert Douglas with the Newark Police Department said the location of the accident occurred in Fremont jurisdiction.

Amtrak officials said the train's crew and passengers did not suffer from any injuries.

One of the dogs also suffered fatal injuries after being hit by the train, authorities said. The Union Pacific Police Department also responded and completed the investigation.

Carter was one of three people who were struck and killed by trains on Saturday, according a report from the Mercury News.

Saturday's train accidents come two weeks after near Smith street in Union City.
