Men Arrested After Newark Home Burglarized

Neighbor's phone call leads to police capture in west Newark

Two men were arrested on suspicion of residential burglary Thursday morning, said Commander Bob Douglas of the.

The men are identified as Emmanuel Gutierrez, 19, and Stephan Lopez, 21. They both are believed to be Newark residents, Douglas said.

They were arrested after Newark police responded to a call about a suspicious vehicle on Mahogany Place in west Newark off Willow Street.

An alert resident called to report two unknown men jumping out of a vehicle and running away around 9:11 a.m.

Officers set up surveillance around the vehicle, Douglas said. Approximately 50 minutes later, they saw Gutierrez run into the car and drive off, he added.

Gutierrez was stopped and detained by officers immediately.

Officers then set out to find Lopez. He was found walking down an undeveloped area of the Cedar Boulevard Extension near Bridgepoint Drive and Cedar Avenue and was also arrested, Douglas said.

Police learned that at least one residential burglary occurred on the 8250 block of Pebble Beach Avenue.

Douglas said the investigation is ongoing and it is not known whether other burglaries occurred or whether the two men may be connected to any other burglaries.

"Bottom line is we've tied them to at least one burglary," Douglas said.

Newark police encourages residents to report any suspicious activity by calling dispatch at 510-578-4237 for any non-life threatening concerns.
