More Than 80 Percent of Sophomores Pass High School Exit Exam

The state Department of Education releases data about the California High School Exit Exams administered during the 2011-12 school year.

Nearly 9 out of 10 Newark students who took the California High School Exit Examination in 2011-12 passed on their first try, according to results released by the state Department of Education.

Students — who first take the test in 10th grade — must pass the exit exam by 12th grade in order to earn a high school diploma.

  • 86 percent of sophomores passed the math portion of the exam
  • 84 percent of sophomores passed the English Language Arts portion of the exam

Last year, 83 percent of sophomores passed the math test and 84 percent passed the English Language Arts portion of the exam.

Newark's results meet or slightly exceed both the county and state averages.

Alameda County

  • 84 percent of students tested passed the math portion of the test.
  • 84 percent of students tested passed the English portion of the test.

California

  • 84 percent of students tested passed the math portion of the test.
  • 83 percent of students tested passed the English portion of the test.

The preliminary results that were released Wednesday include data from tests that were administered in July, October, November and December of 2011 and February, March and May of 2012.

More on NUSD's 10th grade results:

  • A total of 456 sophomores took the math test and 474 took the English Language Arts test
  •  More female tenth graders passed both portions of the exam with 86 percent passing math compared with 85 percent of male students and 88 percent passing the English Language Arts portion compared with 80 percent of male students passing.
  • The subgroups who passed the math exam at the highest percentage rates were Filipino and white students at 95 percent.
  • The subgroups who passed the math exam at the highest percentage rates were Asian and white students at 92 percent.
  • A total of 92 percent of Asian students passed in English, 89 percent in math
  • A total of 91 percent of native Hawaiian or Pacific Islander students passed English and math
  • A total of 91 percent of Filipino students passed English, 95 percent in math
  • A total of 80 percent of Hispanic or Latinos passed in English, 81 percent in math
  • A total of 68 percent of black students passed in English, 21percent in math
  • A total of 92 percent of white students passed in English, 95 percent in math
  • A total of 79 percent of students from low-income families passed in English and math
