Need to Know: Summer Sessions Start, Council Meets, Newark Man to Appear in Court

Summer programs for kids start in Newark, the City Council will hold numerous public hearings, murder suspect to enter plea

Here are five things you need to know in and around Newark through June 26.

  1. Today marks the start of the Ohlone for Kids (and Teens!) Summer Enrichment Program. Five sessions of classes are available for youth from now through Aug. 11. To learn more about the classes available, call 510-742-2304 or visit www.ohloneforkids.com.
  2. The is inviting individuals who want to learn how to play cribbage to weekly meetings, Tuesdays from 6:15 p.m. to 9:15 p.m. on Tuesdays at Round Table Pizza, 37840 Fremont Blvd., Fremont. For more information, visit www.cribbage.org.
  3. Families with children in preschool through grade 4 are encouraged to visit the Wednesday, June 22, for the start of the Summer Reading Buddies program. Younger children are teamed up with high school volunteers and learn how to form good reading habits. Registration is required.   4. Newark’s City Council meets Thursday, June 23, with a packed agenda that includes 13 hearings, including one to consider demolishing the old Cattlemen’s Restaurant and constructing two new commercial buildings within the same plaza. Newark Patch will provide a more detailed report on Thursday’s meeting in the coming days.
  5. Newark resident Jason Otis Monroe is scheduled to appear in court at 9 a.m. on Friday, June 24, to enter a plea and have future hearing dates set. Monroe  and charged with homicide after Newark police found Evangeline Supena Contillo, 25, dead inside a home on the 36600 block of Cherry Street.
