Ohlone Community College Board of Trustees looks to fill vacant seat

Ohlone Community College's Board of Trustees is in search of a trustee to represent the Newark community.

The college is accepting applications for one of its two Newark trustee positions through Friday. Applications must be submitted no later than 4 p.m.

To apply, a candidate must be at least 18 years old, a California citizen, a registered voter and a resident of Newark. The candidate who is chosen will serve until November 2014, the next election for the seat.

Trustees of the seven-member board serve four-year terms and participate in monthly board meetings and workshops. The board meets the second Wednesday of each month, according to the Ohlone Community College website.

Applications must be sent along with a resume and cover letter that explains why a candidate would like to serve on the board.

Applications can be emailed to Shelby Foster at sfoster@ohlone.edu or submitted to the president's office of the Ohlone College Fremont Campus, 43600 Mission Blvd., Fremont. The office is in room 1216 in Building 1.

The board is required to fill the vacancy by May 11, according to Foster, a confidential staff assistant in Ohlone's Office of the President.

A special meeting will be scheduled for May 11, said Foster. She added the they hope to have an agenda online that will include information on the candidates by May 4.

As of yet, no one has applied for the position, but Foster said she has heard of at least one person who is interested.

"We are confident we will get some good responses," Foster said.

The vacancy on the Board of Trustees is due to the death of  from cancer on March 11. He was elected to the board in November, 2002.
