Osana Futi "Got What Was Coming," Suspect Text Said

The lead detective in the investigation of the stabbing death of 18-year-old Osana Futi said the Fremont man charged with the Newark student’s murder texted his girlfriend the morning after and said Futi “got what was coming to him.”

Det. Anthony Holguin of the Fremont Police Department was the third witness to testify during the third day of preliminary examinations held at the Fremont Hall of Justice.

Abraham Ibrahim Hade, 18, of Fremont, faces . He and three minors were in connection to Futi’s murder.

Futi died at about 1:20 a.m. April 29 — two hours after he was stabbed following a house party on the 4900 block of Hyde Park Drive, near Yellow Stone Park Drive in Fremont.

Holguin testified Tuesday morning after Frank Gutierrez, the grandfather of one of the minors arrested in the killing, took the stand to provide more details about how he took the knife police believe was used to kill Futi from his grandson.

Gutierrez , which he owned, missing from where he stores it in his home and told one of his grandchildren to text his grandson immediately after he discovered it was missing.

“I immediately assumed he had taken it,” Gutierrez said.

After briefly going out to look for his grandson, Gutierrez said the teenager and three of his friends arrived at his home, and he noticed something in his grandson’s pocket. He found the missing knife and threw it in the trash out of anger, he said.

“I was pretty upset,” Gutierrez said. “I thought ‘What the hell do you think you’re doing?’”

Gutierrez said he later pulled the knife out of its case and saw a “small dark teardrop stain” and decided to call police.

Holguin confirmed that authorities received a call around 1:30 p.m. April 29 from a resident who said her grandson came to the residence with a “bloody knife.”

Later that day, four suspects were arrested, including Hade. Also arrested were a 16-year-old girl, a 14-year-old boy and a 13-year-old boy.

During Tuesday's preliminary examination, Holguin told the court the following:

• At least one witness identified Hade as the ;
• That Gutierrez's grandson said he saw Futi assault two people, including one of the other suspects who was arrested;
• That that same juvenile suspect first denied being at the party, then said he was the one who stabbed Futi out of self-defense, then changed his statement and said he saw Hade stab Futi;
• That an autopsy revealed Futi was stabbed in his upper thigh and that the wound was consistent with the knife authorities seized as evidence. That autopsy showed the injury severed Futi's femoral artery;
• And that forensic analysis of Hade’s cell phone show that he sent text messages to his girlfriend regarding the night of the stabbing.

Holguin said Hade first responded to a text about the stabbing after his girlfriend inquired the morning after about whether a stabbing occurred at the party.

Hade responded with “something like that,” according to Holguin. Holguin said moments after Hade texted his girlfriend again with, “Can I talk to you in person? Sorry babe. It was my bad. F--- that n----, anyways.”

Another text was sent from Hade to his girlfriend that read, “N---a just got what was coming [to him],” Holguin said.

A surveillance video of a conversation between Hade and the minor whose grandfather owned the knife was also showed in court Tuesday morning.

In that video, the two boys were shown talking about a variety of topics, including food and bathroom breaks, relationships with girls, frustrations with police officers and what officers were asking about the stabbing.

The minor suspect also told Hade numerous times during the conversation that authorities said Hade would do it, but that he would say that he stabbed him instead.

“If they’re going to say it was you, why would I let you go down for some shit,” the minor asked at one point.

Hade responded at a different time, “We both shouldn’t be taking the blame for s---. We weren’t there. This is bull----.”

Defense attorney Thomas Knutsen later asked Holguin about a witness who said an individual was seen running away from the scene with a knife when officers first responded. Knutsen asked whether the description of that individual matched a description of Hade, to which Holguin stated the descriptions were inconsistent with one another.

Holguin also responded that authorities did not show photos of the suspects to eyewitnesses during follow-up investigations after Knutsen asked whether they had.

The morning preliminary examination was continued to the afternoon and another preliminary hearing was scheduled for Wednesday afternoon. Newark Patch will provide more updates in a separate report that will be published at a later date.
