UPDATE: Neighborhood Lockdown Connected to East Palo Alto

Newark police locked down a neighborhood in the Lake district as part of an investigation of crimes that happened in East Palo Alto and elsewhere.

SWAT teams comprised of members of the Newark and Union City police departments responded to the 5600 block of Portsmouth Avenue at 6:37 p.m. Wednesday, police said.

"We provided an outside assist for (the) East Palo Alto Police Department regarding an investigation that stemmed from their city," Commander Bob Douglas of the Newark Police Department said in an email to Patch.

Police forces were in the area throughout the night, with a SWAT team shining a light from Jarvis Avenue onto a two-story house on Portsmouth Avenue. Police and fire units were on scene until about 4:22 a.m. Thursday, police said.

Douglas did not confirm whether the crime scene is connected to  around 7:45 p.m. and traveled for about 100 miles through numerous East Bay cities, ending in the Central Valley. He referred further questions to the East Palo Alto Police Department.

No one was available for comment with the East Palo Alto police as of 8 a.m.

Around 7:45 p.m. Wednesday, police spotted a vehicle registered to one of two men suspected of two murders in East Palo Alto and another in Grand Junction, CO.

Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver fled, leading police agencies and CHP on a pursuit that wound through the East Bay and ended in Lathrop. Two people were arrest, but according to the most , they were not the murder suspects.

Streets were blocked off from the 35100 block of Blackburn Drive to Portsmouth Avenue at Abington Drive during the neighborhood lockdown.

Residents on Abington Drive said they were told to stay indoors and that a person was barricaded inside of a home. Residents just arriving home were not allowed into their homes, and the streets were blocked off to traffic.

Firefighters said no injuries had been reported to their knowledge.
