Police Sergeant Is Top Paid Employee In Newark For 2021

A Newark police sergeant was the highest paid position in the city with a police captain coming in second.

NEWARK, CA — A Newark police sergeant was the highest paid government employee in the city in 2021, according to numbers released by the California State Controller's Office.

Coming in at $296,811, with base pay and benefits, the position out-earned the city's chief of police by just over $45,000 to become the highest paid city official.

The position paid nearly double the $127,816 – $155,334 average pay range for the role, according to the State Controller's Office.

The next highest paid municipal employee in Newark was a police captain position with a total wage compensation of $289,928 and the Recreation and Community Services director at $266,669. The chief of police ($251,389) came in at sixth place followed by the city manager ($246,931) in seventh.

Police department-related roles made up seven of the city's 10 highest employee wages. The city's public works director rounded out the top 10.

The highest paid city council members in the state belonged to the city of Los Angeles, with wages sitting above $200,000. The highest paid mayor in the state belonged to San Francisco, with a wage of $353,802, followed by Los Angeles. The ranking did not differentiate between full- and part-time employees.
