Residents Honor Newark Mayor's 33-Year Tenure
The Lake and Rosemont Association builds memorial for Mayor David Smith at Lakeshore Park.
For half of his life, David Smith has been mayor of the city of Newark.
Next week, he will bid farewell to that role.
Smith, the longest standing mayor in California, was honored with a dedication ceremony hosted by the Lake and Rosemont Association (LARA) Thursday afternoon.

With an American flag waving in the strong winds, Smith, 66, was speechless when a plaque in his name mounted on a 2,000-pound boulder was unveiled at 's cove.
“I will cherish this spot in Newark forever. It will become my favorite place, believe me. It’s just absolutely wonderful,” Smith said looking at the memorial that is surrounded by three young Birch trees. “I appreciate all of you. This is an incredible honor and thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

LARA board members thanked Smith for the decades of dedication he has given to the city of 42,573 residents.
LARA President Tom Cree said the installment of the commemorative plaque was a collaborative effort among Newark residents and the city.
And while has brought many things to Newark including and the , collaboration is what Smith said is the most significant accomplishment he has achieved since he became mayor in 1978.
“We have always worked together here in the city of Newark,” Smith said. “It has always been the teamwork that has been the hallmark.” For the full speech from Smith, see the video above.
Smith announced his decision on May 18. And while City Council members and leaders were surprised by the news, Newark residents were more accepting of his decision.
The Advanced Choir even sang their best wishes to Smith to a revamped version of “Carol of the Bells.” See a video of their performance above.
As he wraps up his tenure as mayor, Smith said he’s feeling positive about his future and the future of Newark.
“I’m ready to change the page to the next chapter in my life,” Smith said.
Smith’s last day as mayor is Dec. 8. During the Dec. 8 City Council meeting, will be sworn in as the city's third elected mayor.
“It’s going to an easier transition [for Newark]. [Nagy] is going to be a great mayor,” Smith said. “We’re different guys, but he bleeds Newark.”
