Ross Opens New Store in Newark

After months of construction, Ross Dress For Less is opening its doors in Newark Friday morning. 

Known for selling well-known brands for less cost than department stores charge, will occupy 25,000 square feet at the Newark Marketplace Shopping Center, according to a corporate spokesperson.

The opening will be a homecoming for the corporation, which once had its headquarters and distribution center in Newark, said Bobbi Chaville, senior director of investor and media relations of Ross. Pleasanton is now home to Ross headquarters.

“We’ll have a presence again in Newark,” Chaville said.

The location was chosen based on several variables, including visibility and the surrounding businesses, she said.

It will be the first time the building has been occupied since Drug Emporium closed about three years ago, according to Terrence Grindall, community development director for the City of Newark.

The store’s opening is indication that companies are still finding Newark an ideal place for business, Grindall said.

“Things are definitely improving. We’re seeing a lot more interest, particularly in commercial properties,” he added. “We’re encouraged by the general move (in economic development).”

Newark’s Ross store will employ approximately 45 people, either part-time or full time, Chaville said.

She didn't disclose the length of the lease for the Newark location but said the corporation usually signs 10-year leases and often applies for extensions that total three or four additional years.

“Our intention is to be there in the long run,” Chaville said.

A ribbon cutting and grand opening ceremony is scheduled for 9:15 a.m. Saturday.

Also on Saturday, the corporation will open its 1,000thstore in Pleasant Hill, near Concord.

Newark’s store hours will be:

• 9:30 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Monday through Thursday
• 9:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday
• 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Sunday
