School Board to Discuss Flexibility for Categorical Funding

The Newark Unified Board of Education meets Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

A public hearing and a vote will be held to discuss categorical program flexibility at the Newark Unified Board of Education meeting Tuesday night.

The resolution would allow the board to “transfer and maximize the flexible use of funds” to serve the school district and specify that the Title 42 Budget Act funds that will be unrestricted will be used for numerous purposes, including school site allocations, employees’ salaries and benefits, class size reduction, equipment and more.

According to the board’s agenda packet, two Senate bills allow school districts to exercise flexibility in the use of Title 42 Budget Act funds and gives them until fiscal year 2014-15 to do so.
