School Board to Discuss Four Key Positions

The Newark Unified Board of Education will discuss the appointment of four key positions at a special board meeting tonight.

Employment and appointments of a superintendent, interim chief business official and two principals will be discussed during the meeting’s closed session, which will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the , 5715 Musick Ave.

Each of the positions became vacant during the last half of the 2010-11 school year after the former superintendent Kevin Harrigan, former chief business official Steven Shields and former principals  of Newark Junior High School and of Graham Elementary School all .

On Monday, Dave Marken, assistant superintendent of the Dublin Unified School District, with Newark Unified.

Newark school officials haven't announced Marken's hiring, but for the public session of tonight’s meeting, the agenda includes the item "Employment Contract Superintendent of Schools for Newark Unified School District."

The public portion of the board’s meeting begins at 7:30.

Also on the agenda is the employment contract for an interim superintendent. On June 14, the Newark Unified Board of Education of the Hayward Unified School District as its interim superintendent.

No details have emerged on what dates Duran will serve the district or when Marken will step into his position. Marken told Patch Monday that he plans to stay with Dublin Unified until the end of June.

The board will also discuss and possibly vote on the budget for ’s 2011-12 Western Association of Schools and Colleges accreditation process and the job descriptions for three positions: director or coordinator II of curriculum instruction and accountability, coordinator of continuous improvement and federal, state and special projects and academic achievement school support coach.
