School Board to Vote on More Layoffs

Approval of layoffs for certificated and classified employees in the hands of the board.

The Newark Unified School Board of Education will be asked to vote on whether to authorize the layoffs of certificated and classified staff during its regular school board meeting tonight.

A total of 23 full-time equivalent positions are marked for elimination for the upcoming 2011-12 school year if the board approves Resolution No. 1852.

If approved, this would result in the elimination or reduction of positions for 27 school employees.

The five-member board is also scheduled to vote on whether to approve Resolution No. 1851, which would reduce numerous classified services. These services are:

Kinds of Services FTE Reduction Budget Manager; Business Office 1 Administrative Assistant; Superintedent's Office 0.6 Director; Maintenance, Operations and Transportation 1.0 Director; Information Technology 1 Staff Secretary I; Human Resources 0.46 School Secretary II; Child Development Services, Adult School 0.73 Administrative Secretary; Pupil Services 1.0 Maintenance Specialist II; Maintenance, Operations and Transportation 1.0 Office Clerk and Administrative Secretary; Child Care 12 months to 11 months

Work days may also be reduced if the board approves Resolution No. 1853.

This would reduce the number of work days by three for various employees that work both at school sites and the district office. To see the complete list, download the board agenda here.

District officials will also be updating the board on budget modifications and will ask them whether to approve budget reductions.

The budget modifications total about $1.703 million for the 2010-11 school year and $3.161 million for the 2011-12 school year.

The board meets at 7:30 p.m. at the district office, 5715 Musick Avenue.
