School District Gives Out School Supplies to Students

Four children were called to the principal’s office at Musick Elementary School – but they weren’t in trouble.

They were greeted with smiles and boxes – full of new school supplies.

The four were the first students from Musick to see the school supplies that were given as donations to the Newark Unified School District through the second annual Stuff the Bus event held on Aug. 20 and 21.

“It’s amazing how people would give to the community for kids who need them,” said one sixth grader who sorted through notebooks and folders.

A total of 49 boxes of an array of school supplies – such as notebooks, paper, pens, coloring tools, glue and even tissue paper – were filled during the August event.

Superintendent Dave Marken said he was impressed by the generosity of the community as a whole.

“It’s unbelievable,” Marken said.

And the two second graders, fifth grader and sixth grader who sorted through the contributions were also in awe.

“Good,” “great” and “nice” were the words they used after Principal Debbie Ashmore asked them how they felt about knowing people gave the donations to the school.

Musick Elementary was given four boxes, and Ashmore said they will be working on how to distribute the rest of the donations. The four who were called in were allowed to take one item each.

The school supplies were divided up equally, and Marken said each school site will determine the process of giving out the donations.

Stuff the Bus was held in conjunction with WalMart and the Kiwanis Club of Fremont Foundation.
