Seniors Swing Into Fun
Newark seniors hop, twirl and step at first 1950s Sock Hop Dance
Seniors jived their way into the Silliman Activity and Family Aquatic Center Tuesday to dance the afternoon away.
A total of 66 seniors came to the center's gymnasium for its first ever 1950s Sock Hop.
The event was hosted by the City of Newark's Recreation and Community Services Department.
Senior Recreation Coordinator Kelly Hess said turnout was great despite the wet weather.
The Canyon Band played live music as attendees danced and sang along to music from their teen years.
Attendees raved about how much fun the three-hour long event was, and how swing instructor Mike Quebec and his dance partner joined in, showcasing their boogie woogie moves and often dancing with the seniors.
Senior dances have been hosted by the city's recreation department in the past and Hess said a swing theme will likely be a repeat in the future.
