City honors Betty Gentry for her 48 years with Newark.

With flying kisses to the crowd, Betty Gentry accepted a proclamation on June 23 made in her name for her 48 years of service to the City of Newark.
A longtime dance instructor, Gentry just wrapped directing and choreographing her . She announced her retirement earlier this year.

Since then, her teaching has expanded to include ballet, tap, hip-hop and adult dance classes. The City of Newark honored her in her 40th year by naming the dance studio inside the after her.
At a City Council meeting Thursday, Newark officials and residents marked her commendation with a standing ovation.

“You’ve just created such a legacy here in Newark. You’ve touched so many lives,” said Mayor David Smith. “Your light is going to continue to shine on us for years and years to come.”
“Beautiful,” said Gentry as Smith completed the presentation of her commendation. “Thank you. It’s been such a joy working in Newark. From the very beginning, when I was hired and started teaching, the whole city is just full of warmth, love and care,” Gentry said.
“I’ve always been very, very happy. And (my) classes were good because of you,” Gentry said. “Thank you for letting me be a part of your lives. …It was not a job. It was a joy.”
