The Final Show

Newark Junior High hosts its last music concert tonight.

Tonight's 2011 Spring Concert will be the last for Newark Junior High School music programs.

The Advanced Band concert begins at 7 p.m. and marks the final farewell for choir and band programs at the junior high as a result of  budget cuts.

District officials have said they need  from the 2011-2012 $49 million budget, depending on state funding.

, the Board of Education voted to eliminate 23 full-time equivalent positions for the 2011-12 school year, affecting 23 certificated employees.

Among those employees are Joanne Hong, choir director at the junior high and Andre Ehling, choir director at and band director at both the junior high and high schools.

The Newark Junior High band will hold a canned food drive and the Newark Band Boosters will have its Sweet and Savory Bake Sale at the event.

Proceeds from the bake sale will be donated to the Second Harvest Food Bank and attendees are encouraged to bring non-perishable canned foods.

The concert will be held in the cafeteria of and is free to the public. Doors will open at 6:45 p.m.
