The Fremont store was built with "green" features like low-flow water fixtures in restrooms and LED outdoor signs, the release said.
Newark’s Community Development Director Terrence Grindall said Toys "R" Us had occupied the Newark location in the Newpark Plaza Shopping Center for several years.
The plaza has nearly 200,000 square feet of commercial buildings and is home to TJ Maxx and 24 Fitness. A number of smaller businesses will open soon, according to signs displayed on several storefronts.
Grindall has said he is optimistic that a business will show interest in the former Toys "R" US location, but plans for the building are unknown at this time.
