Watch 'The Croods' for Free Friday Night at Movies in the Park

The computer animated comedy will be shown at Newark Community Center Park, located at 35501 Cedar Blvd. around sunset.

Why spend a lot of money to take your family to the theater Friday night when you can watch a new animated blockbuster for free?

In their latest Movies in the Park feature, the Newark Relay for Life committee are hosting Dreamworks' computer animated comedy The Croods Friday night at Newark Community Center Park, located at 35501 Cedar Blvd.

The movie will be projected on a 275-inch screen.

Though the movie is no longer in local theaters, it is not yet available on DVD or (legal) online streaming channels.

The free movies serve as a promotion and recruitment event for Newark's Relay for Life, a 24-hour walk/run for cancer awareness taking place this weekend at Newark Memorial High School.

Mike Bucci, one of the event organizers, said Movies in the Park not only helps gain exposure for Relay for Life but provides a much-needed, free community gathering.

“It can get expensive to take your family to the theater. For four or five people, it can come out to $80," Bucci told Patch previously.

Movies in the Park can draw up to 300 attendees, Bucci said.

According to Bucci, movie-goers usually arrive around between 6:30 and 7 p.m., with the movie starting around sunset.

Friday night's screening is the second to last Movies in the Park event this summer. The series closes next month on Aug. 23 with classic 70s musical Grease.
