Need to Know: Murder Suspect's Pre-Trial Hearing Begins; Free Job Fair; City, Schools Observe MLK Day

Here are five things you need to know in and around Newark through Jan. 22.

  1. Today is Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and in honor of the civil right’s leader, City Hall is closed and students of the Newark Unified School District are taking the day off. If you’re looking for a way to celebrate MLK’s legacy, consider the being held at 777 B St. in Hayward that begins at 9:30 a.m. for more information.
  2. The Newark Unified Board of Education will meet for a regular meeting on Tuesday. A work study session on bonds will begin at 5:30 p.m. and public session begins at 7 p.m. Among the items on the agenda is a recognition of employees who have worked for the district for 25, 30 or 35 continuous years.   3. Two criminal cases connected to Newark will be heard at the Fremont Hall of Justice this week. that was once located in Newark are expected to appear in court for a preliminary hearing at 9 a.m. on Thursday. On Friday, is due in court for a pre-trial hearing.
  4. Looking for a job? The Fremont Adult School will be holding a free Career and Community Resource Fair on Saturday. From 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., job-seekers can meet job recruiters and learn more about employment support groups. for more information.
  5. Get ready to rumble! Big Time Wrestling will make its way back to Newark with a Saturday event that will feature a 15-Man Battle Royal and a Women’s Triple Threat Match. The event begins at 7:30 p.m. to learn how you can get tickets.
