Week in Review: Refinery Plant To Reopen, Teacher Remembered, Back-to-School Preparation

A Newark refinery plant announced this week its . Evergreen Oil Refinery off of Smith Avenue is striving to open a part of its plant that was damaged in a March 29 fire by September. The plant also released its August Newsletter. .

Hundreds mourned the death of during a memorial service held at Newark Memorial High School on Aug. 17. Walla was best known for teaching choral and instrumental music at Newark schools for two decades.

A made headlines this week when it was announced that her blood marrow donor would attend her wedding – 16 years after he saved her life.  The Saturday wedding marked the first time the woman’s fiancé met her blood donor.

The indicated that Newark Unified School District – and school districts statewide – is seeing growth in students’ performance. The 2011 results show that more students are scoring at or above grade level than years past.
