Costa Mesa Robbery Arrest

An arrest today in Costa Mesa when a transient was suspected of robbing a senior citizen in Costa Mesa. The victim broke her hip in attack.

COSTA MESA, CA — A 24-year-old transient was behind bars today on suspicion of robbing a senior citizen, who broke her hip during a struggle with the suspect in Costa Mesa, police said.

Simon James Yousif was booked on suspicion of strong-arm robbery and being held on $85,000 bail, according to Orange County Jail records.

The 74-year-old woman, whose name was withheld, was robbed about 8:15 p.m. Wednesday after she had just withdrawn cash from a Bank of America ATM at 2701 Harbor Blvd., police said.

Yousif allegedly snatched the victim's wallet and she fell down and broke her hip while trying to get it back, police allege.

Officers found the suspect hiding behind a tree on the south side of Adams Avenue, west of Pinecreek Drive, and he made an unsuccessful attempt to run away, according to police, who allege he was carrying the woman's ID, cash and social security card.
