How Disneyland Gave Birth to Doritos

Mickey Mouse helped hatch Doritos.

The accidental invention is Orange County's only true claim to fame in the rise of Mexican food in the United States, according to author Gustavo Arellano's new book, Taco USA, which is excerpted in OC Weekly.

As Arellano tells it, the birth of Doritos took place in Frontierland, at Casa de Fritos, a Mexican restaurant originally located near Aunt Jemima's Pancake House.

There, in the early 1960s, a batch of discarded tortillas was saved from the trash and transformed into an off-menu item that became an instant hit.
