Exotic Plants, Lobsters, Free Concert and More
Coming attractions this week in Newport Beach.

1. Don't forget Lobsterfest at Newport Beach is Saturday at Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort & Marina. Maine lobster will be flown in fresh that morning and will be prepared on site alongside a buffet that includes shrimp, mussels, tri-tip, corn-on-the-cob, salads and dessert. 2. On Tuesday, Aug. 6, anyone who donates blood or platelets at Hoag Blood Donor Services will receive a free Subway sandwich. Donations will be accepted between 11:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at 510 Superior Ave., Suite 130 in Newport Beach.
3. The last concert of the annual Concerts in the Park series, sponsored by the Newport Beach City Arts Commission, is scheduled for Sunday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Upstream will play a blend of “island music” influenced by reggae, techno, funk, hip hop and soca. The group has opened for such acts such as R.E.M., Dave Matthews, The Wailers, Cherry Poppin’ Daddies, Harvey Danger, Inner Circle, Wailing Souls and Jimmy Buffett. Concerts in the Park will be held on the Civic Green at the new Newport Beach Civic Center. Admission is free and attendees are encouraged to bring picnic dinners, blankets and beach chairs. Food and drinks will also be available for purchase. Free parking is available in the Civic Center parking structure and Central Library parking lot. 4. The Newport Harbor Orchid Society will host its first annual Exotic Plant and Orchid Festival at the Westminster Mall from Aug. 9-11. More than 20 Southern California nurseries and growers are expected to participate. The festival will also include an art show featuring popular local Vietnamese and Chinese artists as well as members of the NHOS.
“The First Annual Exotic Plant and Orchid Show will allow Southern Californians to view, learn about and purchase a wide variety of orchids and other exotic plants,” Ha Bui, spokeswoman for NHOS, said. Admission and parking are free.
