Thieves Try to Steal from Unlocked Cars

Newport Beach police say a man removed items from a car parked on Irvine Avenue, then stashed the goods in the bushes.

A handful of thieves allegedly worked together to try and steal items from unlocked cars in Newport Beach, but a witness stopped them in the act, police reported.

The incident took place on Tuesday, July 23 about 3:45 p.m. in the 1100 block of Irvine Avenue. According to police, a witness saw a man checking for unlocked car doors in a parking lot and two women were acting as his lookouts. The witness told police the male suspect opened a car door, took out some items and put them in nearby bushes.

According to police, the witness confronted the suspects and the three of them fled on foot.

The property was recovered from the bushes and returned to the owner.

The man was described as being about 20-years-old, standing 5 feet 8 inches tall, with black hair. He was wearing a hooded sweatshirt, jeans and black shoes.

One female suspect was described as being 20-years-old, heavy set, with brown shoulder length hair, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt with sparkly lettering on the back, jean shorts and pink knee high socks.

The second woman was also about 20 years-old, heavy set, with reddish blonde shoulder length hair, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt, jean shorts and converse tennis shoes.
