LOS ANGELES, CA — Actor Danny Masterson appeared in court for the first time on Friday after being charged with three counts of felony rape at his Hollywood Hills home between 2001 and 2003. Masterson, who played Steven Hyde on popular sitcom That '70s Show, could spend up to 45 years in state prison if convicted.

The criminal complaint says Masterson raped a 23-year-old woman in 2001, another woman in April 2003, and a third woman between October and December 2003. The District Attorney's Office declined to press charges in two other incidents, citing insufficient evidence and the statute of limitations.

The 44-year-old actor and his lawyer have publicly denied all sexual assault charges. Attorney Tom Mesereau, known for defending Michael Jackson and Bill Cosby, claimed the prosecution of his client was politically motivated as District Attorney Jackie Lacey runs for reelection.

Mesereau also attempted to have the media barred from the courtroom by claiming their presence would unfairly prejudice jurors against his client, but Superior Court Judge Miguel T. Espinoza refused.

“There have been repeated attempts to politicize this case,” Mesereau claimed. “He is absolutely not guilty and we’re going to prove it.”

Deputy District Attorney Reinhold Mueller said the claims were "pure speculation."

The actor will return to court on October 19 for arraignment.
