Petco Unleashed Now Hosting Cat Adoptions

Twice a month, prospective pet owners can head to the Petco Unleashed in North Hollywood for a chance to check out a few felines they could one day take home.

Nonprofit pet sanctuary Heaven on Earth is now hosting adoption events on the second and fourth Sunday of each month at the new NoHo business.

The organization, which typically houses 160 cats at a time, doesn't do same day adoptions, but instead offers a two-step process involving a home visit.

"We try to make sure we get a good match between the cat and the family," said Ritchie Gliesel, Heaven on Earth's board president.

Most of the cats are rescued from county shelters if they've been there for too long and are approaching a euthanization date, he said.

Pamela Geisel heads the adoptions program and says each cat is spayed or neutered, caught up to date with vaccines, microchipped and treated for worms or fleas before heading to its forever home.

She said Heaven on Earth also does adoption events out of the Van Nuys Petco, but that she's especially excited to be doing them in North Hollywood as well.

"We feel like there's a lot of apartments, condos and townhouses where small dogs and cats might be ideal pets, Pamela Geisel said, adding: "When you adopt from a rescue or a shelter you've saved two lives: the one you adopted and the one you made room for."
