'Inspiration Breaks Free' Sculpture Wins Local Award

By Jerilyn White

April’s First Place winner in the Printmaking/Sculpture category at the Carlsbad-Oceanside Art League (COAL) is Carlsbad resident and business owner Marta Hotell.

Her metal sculpture “Inspiration Breaks Free” is a beautiful example of the way this dedicated environmentalist and artist welds and forges used metal, giving it a new purpose and providing joy in the process.

“I have always been drawn to metal sculptures—compelled by them is probably more the truth.  Imagine it:  someone is able to manipulate this rigid functional material into graceful dynamic art forms,” explained Hotell.

Hotell has been sculpting and painting for pleasure while working more than full time with her husband, sons, daughter-in-law and others to build their family consumer product company—located in Carlsbad and born out of their personal conviction to reuse and renew, and their creation of a unique, stainless steel drinking bottle they call ALEX.
