Authorities Investigate Camp Pendleton Suicide

A civilian died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head shortly after 10:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Naval Criminal Investigative Service investigated today the apparent suicide of a civilian at Memorial Golf Course on the grounds of Camp Pendleton.

The civilian died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head shortly after 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, according to a statement from the northern San Diego County US Marine Corps installation.

About an hour earlier, military police and base medics went to the golf course after receiving a call that the same individual was threatening to commit suicide, Marine Corps 1st Lt. Ryan Welsh told U-T San Diego. The Camp Pendleton spokesman did not elaborate on what happened in the hour leading up to the gunfire.

The civilian's name and gender were not immediately released.

The golf course, which is open to the public as well as active-duty personnel, was closed pending further notice, Marine Corps Capt. Barry Edwards said.
