CAMP PENDLETON, CA — Camp Pendleton is among several military bases that could be tapped to house migrant children entering the country from its southern border, CBS News reports.

According to the outlet, the Department of Health and Human Services this week put out a request to the Department of Defense to house children in a vacant dorm at Fort Bliss in Texas.

HHS representatives are also expected to survey Camp Pendleton and Peterson Air Force Base, in Colorado, to determine if they could be used to house unaccompanied minors.

The San Diego Convention Center will be used to house migrant children, possibly as early as this week.

Facilities like the new one in San Diego are designed as stop-gap shelters used to house minors until state-licensed facilities open, a process that can take between 9 months and a year.
