Camp Pendleton Fire Moving Rapidly North Near Cleveland National Forest

A fire that started Friday at Camp Pendleton was moving rapidly toward the north where the base borders the Cleveland National Forest, officials on base released.

The Camp Pendleton fire department—along with mutual aid assets—have contained the south and west portions of the fire on the north end of the base.

The fire has burned more than 500 acres, but is not a threat to any structures as of 3 p.m. Saturday.

The fire began at about 12 p.m. Friday during a training exercise in the Whiskey Impact Area.

Artillery units began training on the base Friday with Howitzer 155mm cannons. That training is scheduled to end late Saturday evening.

The Camp Pendleton Fire Dept. and mutual aid assets are on the scene of the fire, and one mutual aid helicopter is providing support, the base reported. There are no reports of any injuries or damage to any structures.
