Third Fire Sparks At Camp Pendleton

More than 1,500 acres have burned as hundreds of military families were evacuated.

CAMP PENDLETON, CA -- Camp Pendleton remained under extreme fire danger Saturday as crews worked to battle three brush fires that forced the evacuation of hundreds of military families. Two fires sparked Friday, but on Saturday, a third blaze was reported.

As of Saturday morning, the Horno Incident burned 1,000 acres and was zero percent contained while the Vandergrift Incident burned 560 acres and was 70 percent contained.

The Vandergrift Incident sparked around 11:30 a.m. in the Mainside area of the base. Shortly before 7 p.m., officials confirmed a second fire, called the Horno Incident.

And a third incident, burning in impact area Range 409, had blackened 250 acres and was 0 percent contained as of about 1 p.m., according to Orange County Fire Authority.

Although smoke was visible in North County, there were no evacuations in Oceanside, police said.
