Happy 240th Birthday, U.S. Marines!
Celebrations are taking place nationwide to honor the Corps' founding anniversary and social media lights up: #SemperFi #USMCBirthday.

Those two words have long been the calling card for the United States Marine Corps, which today is being celebrated nationwide for its 240th birthday.
In Washington, DC, the Commandant and Sergeant Major of the Marine Corps addressed Marines and cut the celebratory cake, according to the official Camp Pendleton Facebook page.

Dubbed the “West Coast’s Premiere Expeditionary Training Base,” Camp Pendleton covers more than 125,000 acres and is situated just north of Oceanside in San Diego County.
As the world’s most famous expeditionary force, the small but mighty Marine Corps came into existence on Nov. 10, 1775, inside Philadelphia’s Tun Tavern, according to The Hill, and were known then as the “Corps of Marines.”

On Tuesday, Vice President Joe Biden tweeted: “Happy 240th birthday, @USMC. Thank you to all those who protect our nation, and our freedom #SemperFi”. He is among countless individuals who are using social media to salute, honor and give thanks to our nation’s Marines.
The proper way to greet a Marine today? “Happy Birthday, Marine.”
