CHP: Person Jumps Off Interstate 5 Bridge in Oceanside

A person took a fatal leap from an Interstate 5 overpass near Buena Vista Lagoon thursday, causing heavy congestion along the freeway for miles, authorities said.

The jumper plunged from the Cassidy Street bridge in Oceanside and landed in the far-left southbound lane of I-5 about 1:15 p.m., according to the California Highway Patrol.

The fatality left the lane blocked for several hours, snarling traffic on the interstate as far north as Aliso Creek, CHP public affairs Officer Robert Catano said.

Traffic remained heavier than usual in the area into the evening commute, Catano said.
