Jim Wood was born January 31, 1948, in Manchester, New Hampshire, as the only son of Dwight “Doc” and Harriet Wood. Jim’s father was a Navy Corpsman, and in 1955 he brought his family to Oceanside. After his retirement from the Navy, the family settled in Oceanside where Jim attended North Terrace Elementary School and Jefferson Junior High School, and graduated from Oceanside High School and Mira Costa College. Jim and his wife, Pam, have been married for 28 years and have three daughters.

In 1971, Jim joined the Oceanside Police Department and served for more than 31 years, working in child abuse, narcotics, robbery, property crimes, domestic violence, homicide and elder abuse. As a senior investigator, he worked with many outside agencies, including the Secret Service, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and Naval Criminal Investigative Services. He retired from the Oceanside Police Department in December of 2002.

In November of 2002, Jim was elected to the Oceanside City Council after a very active campaign in which he walked virtually every neighborhood in Oceanside. Jim worked hard with citizens and City staff members. He made frequent visits to neighborhoods throughout the City to hold “Neighborhood Office Hours” providing citizens with an opportunity to bring problems and concerns to their Councilmember, as well as providing Jim with their input and expectations.

In November of 2004, the people of Oceanside elected him as their Mayor.

One of Jim’s first acts as Mayor was to approve the developer for the hotel to be built at Oceanside’s Pier. This hotel will make Oceanside a destination for vacationers and business meetings, and will bring the needed economic development, new businesses and jobs to our City, while preserving the beach, the band shell and the Pier as places open and inviting to our own residents.

Jim has made economic development and improved local traffic circulation his top priorities. He is working diligently with the City’s Transportation Manager and the City Manager to develop a plan to solve the traffic congestion problems he inherited. Plans will address both today’s traffic issues and future planning efforts to coordinate the integration of land use and transportation needs.
