More than 400 People Showed up for Credit Union's Free Shred Day

More than 10,000 pounds of documents were disposed of and sent to be recycled during San Diego County Credit Union's Free Shred Day Saturday. The shredding company hires veterans.

More than 400 people showed up with boxes and bags full of documents to be securely disposed and recycled at San Diego County Credit Union's free Shred Day Saturday morning at its Oceanside branch, 625 College Blvd.

One couple showed up with decades of documents, said Branch manager John Newhouse.

“It was just two boxes and it was 40 years worth of stuff,” he said. “They didn’t know what to do with it.”

More than 10,000 pounds of documents were destroyed, said a representative of Shred-It, a veteran owned company that also reaches out to veterans for its hiring.

The credit union started the free service in 2007, it has shred and recycled more than 305,000 pounds of confidential, sensitive documents which, according to a press release from the company, has saved some 2,790 trees.
