Crown Heights is dealing with two shootings this month. Intimidation by gang members and the fear of being reported to immigration authorities has added to the problem, the North County Times reports.
The Crown Heights Neighborhood — adjacent to Oceanside High School — has been hit by two shootings this month. The North County Times’ Brandon Lowrey has been covering the recent gang violence in depth:
A March 2 shooting stunned neighbors, because it happened near a community center and the victim is a beloved 20-year-old soccer coach and a father of two. Neighbors spoke to city officials at a community meeting Tuesday, offering insight as to why some teens join gangs and why crimes aren’t reported.
The weekend slaying of a 17-year-old boy devastated the same neighborhood little more than a week later and neighbors have shown their fortitude in an unlikely way— a group walk to Zumba class.
