Oceanside Garage Catches Fire; Firefighter Injured

The fire caused about $100,000 in damage to the $395,000 structure and another $20,000 to its contents.

A fire that sparked in a garage attached to an Oceanside home Sunday displaced two people, caused about $120,000 in damage and injured a firefighter.

About 20 firefighters from Oceanside and Vista were sent to the home on Meadowbrook Drive near North Melrose Drive at 7:15 a.m. found the garage in flames with shotgun shells and bullet casings exploding inside, Battalion Chief Felipe Rodriguez of the Oceanside Fire Department said.

A firefighter was struck by a casing fragment and sustained a minor injury, Rodriguez said. He was treated at the scene and released back to duty.

The fire spread from the garage to the attic and crews cut a hole in the roof to allow hot gasses to escape, Rodriguez said. The fire was under control in about 35 minutes.

American Red Cross workers temporarily relocated the two residents, according to the battalion chief.
